John received a BS in microbiology from The Ohio State University and a PhD in biochemistry from UCLA. Transitioning from thesis work on protein x-ray crystallography to the expanding environmental field, he began working at Los Angeles area oil refineries as a consultant, branching out to other industries including coatings manufacturing and aerospace. Specialties included sampling and analytical method development for soil gas, soil vapor extraction, and biological treatment methods. He began working at the NAVFAC Engineering Service Center (NFESC, now EXWC) in 1994 on projects involving stormwater treatment, constructed wetlands, and dredged sediment treatment/reuse, and for the past decade has focused on PFAS.
